I don’t. I don’t use either. But I noticed that many WP users are now downvoting SCF on the Plugin Boards. By my rough count, 82 users have posted negative reviews on the WP plugin review site.

In fact, if you look carefully, you’ll see the majority of reviews are negative towards this takeover by WordPress.org. Only 16 or so seem to be positive, and I haven’t read the reviews in detail. But it does seem that users are generally unhappy with WordPress’ stance. The code might be GPL but this does seem inappropriate.

WordPress Plugin Authors have started removing their code from the repository, too. And word is going around that WP may soon have open repositories. This actually might be a good thing. WordPress the tool is actually pretty good, except for some of the Gutenberg changes that include unnecessary bloat. ClassicPress shows how it’s possible to move forward without those changes. That hasn’t been such a successful fork, but I’ve experimented with it here. I’m glad I did.

WordPress.com is just extra bloat, overall. The Jetpack Tools aren’t particularly great but seek to lock you into WordPress.com’s expensive plans. And WordPress.com is owned by non-other than one of the architects of today’s WP misfortunes. Of course, WPEngine is the other.

I suspect a major fork in WordPress is coming, just as Mambo/Joomla experienced a decade ago. Perhaps it’s time.
