Safety is multi-dimensional: where I run, it’s a dual-use cycle track with low levels of lighting (I run at night because it’s cooler) … I always worry about getting sideswiped by a cyclist who didn’t see me.

Cyclists aren’t often aware that pedestrians on the cycle track have right of way (it’s clearly posted in Chinese).

Unfortunately, sometimes there are idiotic motorcycle riders that treat the cycle track as a short cut at high speed. So I make it a point to be visible and erratic so they can’t predict accurately and have to slow down to get past.

Late night/early morning, even guys running are liable to be attacked where I’m from, by drunks, druggies and dogs. I’ve been accosted though never harmed several times in my life by each of these and chased by dogs when riding a motorcycle myself. But I don’t think my heart ever beat so fast.

I’m blessed… but others are not so lucky.
