With the crazy shopping season just ahead of most of us, and higher unemployment than many people can remember, it seems that coupons might be quite useful.
Right now I’m looking for an HD capable LCD TV that is less than 32". It seems no one really wants to sell that size! And my space won’t really allow a bigger set.
Of course, it would be nice with some real HD tv to go with it, but there really isn’t much in Taiwan. There are currently three HD TV providers.
1. Cable companies offer cable top boxes that distribute additional content. On these systems, there are only five HD channels, Discovery HD WORLD, Life HD, Classica, Golf, and HBO HD.
2. On MOD, you can find a little more: You can find nearly 16 HD channels with only one overlap with CABLE TV.
Global News HD
ELTA General TV HD
EYE TV Travel HD
EYE TV Drama HD
FOXCRIME HD
FX HD
Asian Movies HD
ELTA Movies HD
National Geographic Animal Science HD
National Geographic HD
History HD
Asian Movies HD
ELTA Movies HD
ESPN HD
The Golf Channel HD
ELTA Sports HD
3. There is a new entrant called DISH HD ASIA that claims to have the most HD channels in the market (barely!) and the have many of the channels broadcast on Cable/MOD. But they also broadcast additional HD channels:
Fashion HD
Fox HD
FX HD
iConcerts HD
Luxe
NBA
OBS (Korean)
StarWorld HD
While you can’t get ALL the HD channels in one place, by getting 2 out of 3 you could pretty much get the majority: and those two are – MOD TV (basic package + HD family pack) and DishAsia Network. Since you probably already get Cable TV in Taiwan, you’ll have quite a decent amount of TV.
For sports fans, that’s great. And the price: $600 for basic cable, $1000 for DishAsia, and about $450 (all in) for MOD. You’d get pretty much all you need plus Music, too. Both Dish and MOD offer streaming audio.
The Cable Set Top Box in Taiwan is a good alternative to DishAsia if you can’t put up a dish on your building. Otherwise, why not!
