I don’t disagree with the sentiment,… but there is a slight problem with the argumentation. If no one believed anything any more, then how could you do whatever you want with such a people? They surely wouldn’t even believe YOU. Why should they listen? You’ve undermined not also belief and trust but the whole system of belief and trust that supports it.

Of course, you might say: don’t shoot the messenger. Perhaps that is the philosophy that the GOP is pursuing. But most people will come to even distrust that when one day Trump says one thing, the next another, the next another. Of course, in a culture of gobbits (as my ancient history teacher used to talk about)… perhaps it’s not so important… except people are not stupid.

The truth is always awkward and uncomfortable. Hiding it doesn’t mean it goes away. Denying it doesn’t make it non-extant. Lying about it doesn’t mean it’s untrue.
