Well, that left me with a … “… and then” feeling. The individual professional photographer exhibits were reasonable, but conservative, while the curation of the competition left me wondering what the judges left on the tables after selection.
The judges seem to be playing ‘safe’ with sets that highlight themes from previous years. It’s becoming a bit of a trope with this exhibition to obsess over death related themes. Where’s the energy and passion for life?
I felt other ‘themes’ also played it safe, too. Overall, it felt just ‘too safe’, ‘too familiar’, ‘too tired’. I wonder if it’s becoming an artistic cliche for photographers ‘of a certain attitude’.
