So today’s GaoKao included a question about Typhoon Holidays. Does anyone know the exact question? My student had to write about it.

The reason that day off might be incorrect is simply because a day off can be had for any reason, including personal leave. It’s not wrong, it’s probably less accurate in terms of usage to use ‘day off’.

Typhoon day off vs. Typhoon holiday> The problem with holiday is that it conveys other meanings, too, of happiness, travel, celebration but such is language. Words are what they are because of how we use them.

Don’t fuss. English is a mess, anyway. I am surprised people can learn it so well!
