You’ve probably been shocked by the mark up on imported ingredients here, but once you consider the actual costs to importing, you quickly realize that the importers aren’t making a lot of $$$.

Scotch Eggs in Tesco (UK)Cheap like NT$55
Scotch Eggs in M$S (UK)Not so cheap at NT$100
Scotch Eggs in Local SuperMarketNot available for love nor money
Scotch Eggs in Local Vendor (Take Out)NT$139
Scotch Eggs in Edinburgh Vendor (Take Out)NT250~300

But what about making products locally? Such as Scotch Eggs? Would they be comparable in price to the UK? Well, that depends. Are you comparing them to equivalent products?

Well, you could learn to make it yourself. I’m sure you’d enjoy it but not if you’re looking for a late night snack on Friday after a few bevvies!

By the time you buy the ingredients, muster up your energy, get the crumbs made (coz you wanna save a few $), grind the spices, grind the mincemeat (because you used uncut pork), get the mix the right consistency, assemble just one… then cook it, it’ll be way past closing time.

You need equipment, a kitchen, time, energy, washing up, and so on. Oh, don’t forget the overheads (rent, a/c, water, electricity…). I’d say $139 for one sounds pretty darned good, it’s ready to eat. Handmade with love. And you’ll save yourself a bunch of time for a few more bevvies before last orders!

Content yourself: Now have you seen how much Guabao are in London? Don’t forget the service charge of 10%!

So that’s nearly GBP6. At today’s rates, that’s NT$250. I bought one decent one, probably bigger than the one served in London near my home for NT$65. That’s a factor of about 4.

Churchill’s prices are good by comparison. Suddenly those Scotch prices at Churchill’s aren’t looking as expensive, even though they look expensive compared to Tesco prices or Marks & Spencer:

Now compare to places in London that sell ’em! Top 10: Scotch Eggs in London – About Time Magazine

So quit whining and get yourself down to Churchill’s for a Scotch Eggs, Chips and a soda! You’ll be glad you did!
