For those of us who live in the UK, the prospect of working in foreign fields can seem very attractive with higher salaries, lower tax regimes, better weather, and more opportunities. It can seem almost irresistible, can’t it? But you do need to do your research on the best places in the US if you have a green card. While a lot depends on your chosen career path, you should be looking at places like:
1. California – With technology centres like Silicon Valley, San Francisco and a vibrant start-up culture, information technology specialists & workers are in demand in 2014. You’ll need skills in programming, web & social building expertise, and a flair for business because that’s where opportunities will abound. These kinds of skills are ideal for UK expats looking for work and a green card.
2. New York – Business management and finance is still likely to be strong with the number of chief executives set to head (excuse the pun!) even higher. This plays to business & financial centres that are traditionally strong in these areas, like New York City. Of course, New York offers a whole variety of cultural and social opportunities as well for those looking for a little apres-work relaxation. The other advantage of New York is that those in the financial industry can escape a much tighter and less optimistic atmosphere in London.
3. Texas – Another dynamic state economy is Texas, and offers a wide range of opportunities for expat workers in the fields of Aeronautics, defence, energy (oil & gas), computing and healthcare industries. Each of these industries offers a lot of opportunities for UK workers who have special skills and competence not found in Texas.
Now before you consider which of these three destinations is yours, you will need to consider other factors: your family, the taxes, the weather, your future career plans, your social life, the local culture, etc. as much as the salary and opportunities. There is quite a variation within each sector.
