Back in 2002, I was dieting with some success, I’ll admit. I managed to lose over 10kgs … but it wasn’t an easy process or even a short one. But, without taking a single slimming pill I managed to lose the weight through change of diet, increased exercise, and a stronger motivation not to eat snack food. It worked.

However, during that period, I did fall off the ‘wagon’ on several occasions, including the infamous cheesecake incident.

We were in the middle of our SARS period, and everyone was scared. Why? SARS was far more deadly than H1N1, and daily cases were jumping frighteningly in Taiwan.

One of my colleagues had been to a hospital with confirmed SARS infections, as an outpatient. But he should’ve been at home that day. Instead, he went to class; and we both shared a taxi up the mountain to our school. I didn’t know that until later.

On the way, I had bought an entire cheesecake to share with my students from my favorite and hardworking English class; and so we headed up the mountain for a good day of classes. Unfortunately, in the taxi wa’s when I found out he’d been to the infected hospital, and shouldn’t have been wandering around the school campus.

So we were both advised to go home; and I took my cheesecake home; and during that afternoon, I ate the WHOLE thing. The freaky discovery the next day was that I actually LOST weight that day, not much it’s true. How did that happen? I have no idea… There was sugar, cream, cookies, etc. all in the cheesecake, but it’s true I didn’t really eat much else that day after breakfast. Go figure.
