There’s an excellent article at the Guardian on this issue. Given the march of time, and the new storage tools, I think much of what the article says is true.

I’m looking at OS virtualization, so I’m able to run older systems and still access most of my data back to 1995. Before that I had an Amstrad PC, but the disks have long since been lost. I doubt that I could read them even now anyway.
